Food and Wine Matching : Middle Eastern Food

I’ve been working with my first supper club ‘Pop-up Dinner Reading’ to help the ladies behind the cooking, Laura and Anu to enrich their guests’ culinary experience even further by recommending and providing the perfect wines to pair with their delicious tasting menus.

The first supper I helped out with was back at the end of July, Pop-Up Reading’s Israeli/ Persian night, their 4th successful evening. Having been given a heads up about the delicious menu ahead of time, below are the recommendations I made to pair with each course before delivering the wine ordered over to Laura, ready to be served on the night :

StarterAn assorted mezze platter of sorts with dips made from beetroot, aubergine, pistachio, olives etc served with lavash MainLamb Polow with raita: Rice with lamb (a kind of middle-eastern biryani) with yoghurt PuddingBaklava with tahini ice cream 
SPARKLING: Cava is my number one accompaniment for mezze. Dry and smooth, a fun and fabulous way to kick off dinner. [Anna Blanc de Noirs £11]
WHITE: Verdejo is a spanish grape variety that originates from Northern Africa. Full and fruity, perfect for spiced dishes. [Comenge Verdejo £10]
ROSÉ: It is summer after all, go for a dry and fruity Southern French Rose that’ll add a little freshness. [Clos du Canalet £7.50]
RED: Carmenere is a spicy little number from Chile that will go hand in hand with the herbs and spices in this middle-eastern feast – just save some for the main course! [Casa Silva Carmenere £10.50]
WHITE: Lamb doesn’t have to mean red wine. The body and dry characteristics of the Rueda Verdejo will match up to this spicy-ricey main course. [Comenge Verdejo £10]RED: The smooth and suppleness of the Carmenere’s fruit and tannin will compliment, not overpower the lamb [Casa Silva Carmenere £10.50] SWEET: Vin Pays Doux are light and refreshing. Sweet yet lifting and will cleanse the palate after all of those spices. [Cabidos Petit Manseng £12]
